Pediatric Dentistry II Exam Practice

What is the recommended technique for teaching parents proper brushing technique for toddlers and preschoolers?

Use a large toothpaste amount and scrub aggressively.

Do not supervise brushing to encourage independence.

Use age-appropriate brush size, demonstrate brushing technique, supervise brushing, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, and gradually transition to independent brushing.

Guiding parents to start brushing with toddlers and preschoolers relies on teaching safe, effective habits through demonstration, proper tools, and ongoing support. Use a brush that fits the child’s mouth and can reach all tooth surfaces without causing irritation. Show the correct technique in a clear, gentle way—soft, circular motions on outer, inner, and chewing surfaces—so they can mirror what you do. Supervise brushing to ensure they’re applying the right technique, not swallowing toothpaste, and staying on track for the full routine. Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste to protect teeth while minimizing the amount swallowed. Then gradually transition the responsibility to the child, continuing supervision but letting them take the lead as their skills improve. This combination builds correct technique, safety, and independent habits over time.

Use a powered brush only after age 5.
